The length of time which you will be required to install and maintain an IID in all vehicles will range from 6 months to 10 years depending on the crime you are ultimately convicted of and the number of prior offenses on your record. Regardless of the length of your IID requirement, you will not be able to remove the IID from all vehicles you drive until the DOL has received notice from the interlock company that you have gone the previous 4 months without any of the following:

1) No attempts to start the vehicle with BAC of .04 or above

2) You have not failed to take or failed to pass any test required by the IID

3) You have not failed to appear at the installer for scheduled maintenance, repairs, calibration, monitoring, inspection, or replacement of the device

Even if the mandated IID period has run, you will not be eligible to remove the IID from any vehicles until the DOL has received notice from the installer that you have gone the 4 previous months without any of the above occurrences. Even if you choose to forego the installation of an IID in your vehicles and instead choose to wait out the required time period, you will still be required to submit proof that you have had an IID installed for the previous 4 months without any of the above occurrences. In other words, there is no way to simply wait out the requirement. You can choose to wait out the first 8 months, but will have to have an IID installed for the 4 months previous to your request to remove. You will still have to submit proof from the installer that none of the above events occurred within the previous 4 month period in order to have it removed.
